Featured Artist - Karen Waters, Photographic Art

Long before taking up feltmaking, Karen Waters began her art career as a photographic artist, with her focus on New Mexico's nature and wildlife.

She is known for her painterly photographs, which are created by blending photographic textures into her images. These textures, which she creates out of photographing textured objects, are then overlayed and blended into her subject photographs, giving them a dreamlike effect. Some are even printed on aluminum, giving them further dimension and depth.

Karen's work is collected throughout the states and abroad, and will be featured at 7Arts Gallery from November 1, through December 31, 2017.

Opening Reception - 'About Face - The Journey to Female' by Steven Snyder (Guest Artist Series)

The human face has been the principle subject matter of Santa Fe artist Steven Snyder’s work for the past four years. This show traces the time period that Snyder began transitioning to the female gender in late 2015 through 2017. The work, which is sometimes dark and other times playful, chronicles a period in the artist’s life of incredible and challenging personal change. “I could never have envisioned the scope of what it takes to become a woman. This show is very deep and personal for me,” said Snyder.

In many of these painted self-portraits, Snyder uses bright colors and distorts her images. She often blurs the line between male and female identity in her subjects. Most of this work involves the use of mixed-media and many pieces are painted on found wood, which is Snyder’s favorite surface to paint on.  In the most recent pieces, Snyder uses her make-up removal pads which she saves each day, to collage into the art.

About Face opens with a reception on Friday January 5th from 5-7 PM and runs through January 31, 2018. More works by Steven Snyder can be seen at www.stevensnyderart.com

Opening Reception - 'Indigenous-Inspired Gourd Art' by Donna Sherry Boggins (Guest Artist Series)

Long before pottery, glass or metal made its mark on ancient societies, the naturally grown pod, along with animal bone and other organic materials, served both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes for indigenous peoples around the globe.

Working on archaeological dig sites and spending eight years as Board President of a Southern California History Museum, Santa Fe artist, Donna Sherry Boggins, found further inspiration in why and how ancient artisans transformed the lowly gourd into timeless works of art.

“Incorporating similar natural materials and technique, I try to recreate the gourds’ domestic purposes, plus capture the spirit and mysticism of the Medicine and Holy men and women who revered these sacred vessels. These are not copies of museum pieces but rather, my unique historical interpretation”, says Boggins.

Opening Reception is on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 4 - 7 pm. Show runs through February 28, 2018.

Opening Reception - Flora Fauna Frida

New paintings by photo-encaustic artist, Angel Wynn. Flora Fauna Frida opens with a reception on Friday September 29, from 5-7 PM.

With the universal wave of fascination for Frida Kahlo, Angel Wynn has created a new body of work that features this famous uni-brow woman. The series includes images of Kahlo, along with her collection of unusual pets, birds and her love of flowers. Wynn combines mixed media using photography, textiles, vintage papers and even cocktail napkins to create smaller works of collage. As an artist, Frida Kahlo was her own muse, as portrayed in most of her paintings. She may have been one of the first big time selfie users! Wynn's new series screams intensity, femininity and all the things that brought great joy to Frida throughout her painful adult life.

"Walking through Frida's garden exhibit at the Tucson Botanical gardens last winter," said Wynn, "like many others I too was under the spell of fascination with this bizarre woman." Wynn takes full advantage to have her new show open while the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art continues to display their photography exhibit of Frida Kahlo.

The show runs through to October 23, 2017.

Workshop with Karen Milstein, 'The Interface of Art and Mental Health. What We Contain, What Contains Us - How We Can Grow Ourselves'.

  • 125 Lincoln Avenue Santa Fe, NM, 87501 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This workshop provides an opportunity to examine and work with the values, hopes, thoughts, feelings, and strengths which we hold inside. We can consider what we cherish and choose to hold onto, what we want to release, and how to do so. Also we can address the outside forces which impinge on us and the boundaries we choose to set against intrusive negativity, while welcoming supportive and nurturing influences.

The physical vessels or containers we gather around us can support our journeys, encouraging us on our paths. All attendees who wish, will have the opportunity to form a small clay vessel.

A brief presentation will be followed by guided discussion and exploration. Attendance is limited to 10 participants, so plan to register early.

Suggested donation of $50 is payable at time of registration. There is an early bird fee of $40 if received by Mon. Sept. 18.  Light refreshments included.

To register, please contact Karen Milstein, PhD, LISW, Psychotherapist, and Clay Artist at midbarnm@gmail.com or (505) 670-2906.
