"Uprooted" is a painterly exploration of the act of leaving home, effectively begun at age 4 as the artist stared at Eulalie’s illustration of “My Bed is a Boat,” from Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses.” A young girl’s small world expands as she travels on clouds of imagination. Contrast the immigrant experience - often a frantic flight to safety, with hopes of finding a new home in a strange country. Silver abstracts these thoughts through a multi-layered, mixed-media experience. Each layer, each dream, is destroyed or obscured as the painting travels forward. There is both hope and terror in this process, figuratively mirroring the immigrant experience, requiring the artist to face and embrace uncertainty and change. This series is dedicated to Silver’s grandparents, a few of the many whose own dreams and terrors took them traveling with uncertainty, fear, and hope to the United States of America.
20% of Proceeds from Silver’s sales during the month of August will go to support the Santa Fe Dreamers Project, http://www.santafedreamersproject.org/ , working to provide legal support and services to immigrants.
