BUFFALO AND BUCKSKIN
New art series by Bekye Fargason opens on Friday, March 8, with an artist reception 5-7 pm. The show runs from March 2 through March 30, 2019.
Native American ceremonial dress and everyday objects have always held a fascination for Bekye Fargason. While she views her work as interpretations and not authentic representations, she sees these items as an enduring testament to spirituality and connectedness to the earth, her own included. “My trips out west as a child left me with a longing to live there, and every other destination, always felt like a detour on the way to my real home place.” Bekye Fargason arrived in Santa Fe via Laurel, Mississippi, New York City and New Orleans. Having found her true home in the west, she spends her time between Santa Fe and Golden, Colorado, finding her inspiration in the land and native cultures. Utilizing techniques she has practiced in her thirty six years of decorative painting, Bekye has developed a style and skill that has inspired her passion for fine art. Bekye creates canvases that are heavily textured, highly luminous and sensitive to changing light. Bekye’s decorative work appeared extensively in this year’s ShowHouse Santa Fe, including the stunning copper ceiling in the main living room. Her work has also appeared in the following national magazines: House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, and Victoria. She has also been featured in local and regional publications including Santa Fean, Su Casa Magazine, New Orleans Magazine, New Orleans Homes and Lifestyles, Louisiana Life Magazine, St. Charles Avenue Magazine and The Gambit.
