Long before pottery, glass or metal made its mark on ancient societies, the naturally grown pod, along with animal bone and other organic materials, served both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes for indigenous peoples around the globe.
Working on archaeological dig sites and spending eight years as Board President of a Southern California History Museum, Santa Fe artist, Donna Sherry Boggins, found further inspiration in why and how ancient artisans transformed the lowly gourd into timeless works of art.
“Incorporating similar natural materials and technique, I try to recreate the gourds’ domestic purposes, plus capture the spirit and mysticism of the Medicine and Holy men and women who revered these sacred vessels. These are not copies of museum pieces but rather, my unique historical interpretation”, says Boggins.
Opening Reception is on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 4 - 7 pm. Show runs through February 28, 2018.
